They switch toggle calls back-and-forth between carpet position and tool position. When replacing it in the machine it would help for it to be marked tool position and carpet position so you knew which direction you should install the switch. The switch should also be re-engineered to handle more amperage so that it does not fail melting internal wiring inside the handle of the machine.
