Steps to use a carpet cleaner

How To Use a Carpet Cleaner Rental

Not sure how to use a carpet cleaner? It’s quick and easy, just follow the steps below to learn how to clean carpet and upholstery for professional results.

Pre Spray

Step 1

Prepare Your Carpet For Deep Cleaning

Before using the carpet cleaner rental machine, vacuum the carpeted area thoroughly. If there are any old or dark carpet stains, spray them with a pretreat formula for extra cleaning power.

Getting Machine Ready

Step 2

Prepare The Carpet Cleaner Machine

Fill the Clean Water Tank with hot tap water and add cleaning solution. Put the tanks back onto the machine and move the carpet cleaner to your starting point. We recommend starting in the far corner of the room.

Step 3

Deep Clean Carpet

Plug in the carpet cleaner and turn on. Make two “wet” passes pressing the trigger to release solution, then release the trigger and make two additional drying passes over the same area. Repeat until the solution being pulled up looks clean. Continue this process around your room, overlapping your clean areas by a few inches. Empty the dirty water and refill clean water and solution as needed.

Step 4

Clean Upholstery & Stairs

Before cleaning any upholstery, read fabric instructions and ensure the fabric code is “WS” or “W.” If it is, test a small hidden area like the underside of a cushion for colorfastness and look it over when it dries. If upholstery color is affected, do not use the upholstery tool rental. If the color is not affected, proceed to use to clean and refresh your upholstery. Do not clean fabrics coded “X” or “S.”

Attach the hose to the machine. While pressing the trigger, slowly make two cleaning passes with the hand tool over the same area. Release the trigger and make two drying passes. Continue until the solution being pulled up appears clean.

Tips: If you are cleaning upholstery, try not to overwet the area. If you are cleaning stairs, position the machine at the bottom but start cleaning at the top stair.

Pouring Dirty Water

Step 5

Clean and Return the Machine

You’ve experienced a dirty pour and DIY satisfaction, you’re almost done! Clean the machine before placing it in your vehicle. Properly cleaning the machine will ensure you aren’t charged a cleaning fee by the retailer.

  • Empty and rinse both tanks
  • Remove any hair or debris from the brush area
  • Wipe down dirt and residue from the bottom of the machine
  • Rinse and wipe down upholstery tool (if rented)

Once clean, return the carpet cleaner (and upholstery tool) to the same store you rented from.
